About me – the blogger

Sara Loftus was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1955. She was given her first camera, a Brownie camera, at the age of eight and never looked back. Initially, she used her camera to chronicle her family’s life. But when she graduated high school in 1972 and traveled abroad to Europe and Israel without her family, her interest in photography grew. She had learned a number of languages and always sought to communicate with others in their own language. This allowed her entrée into situations in which other tourists and travelers might not have found themselves.

While she studied political science, economics, history and languages at university, she continued to seek new experiences in different countries – Japan in 1974, the former Soviet Union in 1976 – all the time taking photographs and trying to learn about the various countries, cultures and peoples that she visited. In the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s she worked in various positions, culminating in professional policy positions at the Ontario Government. She had a couple of children and started photographing and traveling with them.

A number of years ago her film SLR cameras were stolen. Moving into the digital age, she uses Canon cameras, and recently purchased a couple of digital SLRs. She started pursuing photography in a more serious fashion and is continuing to explore both photo composition and professional digital photo editing. She revisited Egypt in November 2008 after having been there almost thirty years prior. She has also traveled to Israel, Scotland, Thailand and Norway in the last few years, while having explored Southern Africa in 2005. Recently, she returned to Rome, Italy on the way to climb up Kilimanjaro over New Year’s Eve – 2009/2010. Then, in 2011, she returned to the Scottish Highlands.

Recently, she visited Newfoundland in 2013. This first blog on WordPress is from that trip.
